Design Challenge:

This wooded lot presented a topographical rise from one end of the building site to the other to accommodate the vehicular approach and pedestrian movement into the house. The selective close and distant views to the west and taking advantage of a narrow corridor of southern exposure suggested a simple massing of the house. The homeowners expressed a desire for a compact, energy efficient and low maintenance home.

Design Solution:

With an auto approach from the left side of the building zone, the house rises to meet the rising topography giving the main living spaces an elevated prospect of the site. The actual footprint of the house is a wedge shape which accommodates the program requirements and provides an expanding perspective from the great room. On either side of the wedge are covered transition zones providing weather protection and simultaneously views to the woods. On the front side this is the entry porch and on the back side it is a covered outdoor kitchen area leading to a screened porch.

The primary interior space is a spacious great room with an open stairway connecting to an open upper level bonus room. The finish palette is a clean combination of maple hardwood and a grey/blue color scheme with stainless steel and cut stone accents.
