Design Challenge:

This site is located at the top of a hill with commanding views of the Green Mountain range from Camels Hump to Mount Mansfield. One of the design goals of the project was to separate the driveway and the garage in order to position the main house at the prominence of the knoll and the views beyond. In addition, developing a processional circulation path upon entering the house which gradually opened up to the views was a goal.

Design Solution:

In achieving these goals, the driveway and garage tuck up behind the house at the high point of the land. From there you move down into the house. The entry sequence from the garage and the front door provides an expanding prospect of the spectacular views as one circulates into the main living space. This great room space is defined on one side with the stone fireplace and cathedral ceiling of the living room. From here all the way to the corner of the kitchen is a continuous expanse of windows opening out to the mountains beyond. The finishes throughout are natural woods combining Pine, Douglas-Fir and structural Eastern Hemlock post and beams. There is also a mix of natural woods on the exterior with the main house in cedar shingles and trim and the garage taking on the look of a weathered barn with seasoned pine board siding.
