Design Challenge:
The new guest cottage was to be located at the site of an existing guest cottage which was to be renovated and added onto to both modernize and accommodate a new program. The existing structure had many deficiencies needing attention including structure and mechanical systems. Maximizing views to features such as an adjacent pond and distant mountains was a project goal. Other considerations included a fully independent living space for year around use by friends and family.
Design Solution:
The design solution incorporated the existing large open plan of the great room with cathedral ceilings. This framing required a new structural system utilizing discreet connectors and members retaining the original look of the timber rafters. New wall and ceiling cavities allowed for insulating the envelope to current standards. New timbers were employed at the exterior to create an entry porch and a large sitting porch along the length of the cottage. New program elements included a mudroom and kitchen along with a bedroom and shared bathroom to serve the unit.Finishes included stained pine walls and ceilings, wide plank pine floors at the great room and natural slate floors at the mudroom and bathroom.
